The Wadi Tharthar Flood Control Project for Iraq is designed to protect Baghdad's urban areas and prevent crop losses by diverting potentially dangerous flood waters from the Tigris river to the Wadi Tharthar depression, a barren valley lying between the Tigres and Euphrates rivers about 65 kilometers northwest of Baghdad.
