Himachal Pradesh, known as the "Apple State" of India, faced challenges in its apple farming sector due to unpredictable weather, outdated orchards, traditional farming methods, and inadequate irrigation. The World Bank’s Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Development Project supported the state in transforming apple cultivation. This included combining traditional practices with modern techniques, introducing better planting materials, and improving storage, processing, and marketing facilities, helping farmers, particularly small landholders, earn higher incomes.

The World Bank Board today approved a US$ 135 million credit to support the efforts of the Government of Himachal Pradesh in modernizing and expanding the production of high value horticulture commodities.
