India: Second National Tuberculosis Control Project

Abstract*

The Second National Tuberculosis Control Program Project for India aims (1) to achieve the global targets of 70 percent case detection and 85 percent cure rate in 100 percent of the districts; and (2) in those the zones where Directly Observed Treatment, short course (DOTS) has been under implementation for five or more years, to cause the incidence of smear-positive Tuberculosis (TB) to start to decline. CommentThe denominator for the case detection rate (disease incidence) is not estimated at the district level, but at the zonal level(groups of states). Nevertheless, the program monitors this indicator, and in the last quarter of 2011, 249 districts exceeded both70% case detection and 85% treatment success. 314 districts exceeded the case detection target, while 499 districts exceeded thetreatment success target. Alternatively, the national case detection target is >70% and treatment success target is >85%, and theprogram has met these targets for the last several years (in 2011, 79% case detection & 85.1% treatment success).
