CONSERVATION OF KAKENAUWE AND LAMBUSANGO, BUTON

Development Objective

The GEFSEC has approved a PDF A grant of $25,000 for this project in the species-rich Lambusango and Kakenauwe forests of central Buton, SE Sulawesi, to Operation Wallacea. The project seeks to (a) maximize income to the local communities around the edge of the National Park from sustainable uses of the forest, (b) ensure that communities on Buton Island are aware of the importance and uniqueness of the Lambusango and Kakenauwe forests and that facilities within the Park are developed and used so that the forests can be used as an educational resource for schools and Universities in SE Sulawesi, (c) ensure that the biodiversity of key indicator groups within the Lambusango and Kakenauwe forests is protected, (d) ensure that populations of flagship species such as Anoa, Macaques, Sulawesi Palm Civets, Dwarf Cuscus etc are maintained in the forests.
