Development Objective

The proposed project development objective i s to improve passenger and freight transport conditions in an efficient and safe manner along national road corridors that are essential to Peru#s competitiveness, in particular those included in the Government#s stimulus package in response to the global crisis. Specific objectives include: (i) improving the quality of selected national roads, through a scaling up of rehabilitation and effective maintenance, as well as the use of low-cost paving technologies; (ii)generating employment opportunities, particularly for the rural poor; (iii) supporting the reduction of road traffic fatalities and injuries (and resulting economic losses), on selected national roads, through the development of #safe corridors# and the implementation of an investment program prioritized through the application of the iRAP road safety assessment methodology; and (iv) strengthening MTC#s institutional framework with a view to improve the effectiveness of the Government#s stimulus package.
