The Demonstration of Alternatives to Chlordane and Mirex in Termite Control GEF Project aims to mitigate environmental and health risks in China associated with chlordane and mirex in termite control by (1) demonstrating the elimination of their use through the introduction of integrated pest management in selected areas, and (2) preparing a national replication program for complete phase-out of chlordane and mirex. Contaminated facilities, equipment and waste from two sites were removed.Liyang Guanghua decided not to participate in the project because it does not think compensation from the ODS grant (for thephaseout of CTC used in the production of C&M) is sufficient for re-building the entire plant, even though the POPs project wouldfinance the plant dismantling and cleanup. A new site (Liyang Xinhai) has been selected. Site cleanup was completed in May 2011.And one more site was selected for cleanup under the project. The project GA was amended in Dec. 2010 to reflect this change.
